It was purified version of household chemicals that would be set off by electrical charge. It was not military grade explosives. A relatively small explosion in a compressed internal air pressure environment is greatly enhanced when it meets a low pressure environment. All it had to do was pierce the skin of the plane and a large section of plane would get blown away. I'm sure they are going to test to see what they tried to do would even down a plane.

the glycerin they use stablelizes it
nitro is not stable if it becomes to hot it will explode
keeping it cool keeps the glycerin in a jell form keeping the chems apart i know these chem but i will not go into deatils as to what they are dont play with this if it is droped kiss your a** good bye if you know where any of this lays call the police it is not to be played with if it is old dont handle it it can and will explode

I heard the foiled plot involved the British equivilent of Gatorade or Powerade. I heard it on the news but I don't know how accurate that info is.

Petrol? Naphtha? Probably not very explosive on their own, but it proves some liquids CAN be explosive.
