Sadness is unhappiness that will fade in time.

Depression is a serious condition that has roots in both mental and physical causes. In most cases of depression, the brain stops producing something called neurotransmitters. They are chemicals the brain uses to send messages back and forth between nerve endings. When there aren't enough of them to go around the brain can' t make decisions the way it should. It's kind of like trying to operate a calculator with an almost dead battery. There isn't enough power for the calculator to make the calculations.

Depression can be caused by many factors. Some of them being abuse as a child, a traumatic experience, financial problems, marriage breakup, death of a loved one. A person abused as a child may deal with that until something else goes badly wrong and that can trigger an episode of depression. Some people suffer depression if they are involved in a particularly horrible auto accident. There are most likely some survivors and helpers of the twin towers attack who will have depression at one time in their life. It can happen to a rough, tough, hardened policeman or fireman who have seen a lot bad things and one day there is one too many and they develop a problem.

Researchers have been delving into depression for many years. Psychologists talk to people who seem to have difficulty dealing with life's issues and always screen them for depression. If it is determined they will refer the patient to a psychiatrist for further evaluation. The psychiatrist can prescribe medication if it is believed the situation might benefit from it. Every ones system is different, a medication that helps one may not work for another and there is no way to be certain from the beginning which is right for any individual. There might be some side effects but they are usually nothing so bad as being depressed. It can be a living hell that some people do not know how to escape from. That's why they need the help of counseling. Some people with mild depression are able to read self help books and work their way out of it IF they have friends and family who are supportive. They are able to improve their mental mood so that the brain once again begins making the necessary neurotransmitters.

Hope that helps.

Although depression is often thought of a being an extreme state of sadness, there is a vast difference between clinical depression and sadness. Sadness is a part of being human, a natural reaction to painful circumstances. All of us will experience sadness at some point in our lives. Depression, however, is a physical illness with many more symptoms than an unhappy mood. The person with clinical depression finds that there is not always a logical reason for his dark feelings. Exhortations from well-meaning friends and family for him to "snap out of it" provide only frustration for he can no more "snap out of it" than the diabetic can will his pancreas to produce more insulin. Sadness is a transient feeling that passes as a person comes to term with his troubles.
Depression can linger for weeks, months or even years. The sad person feels bad, but continues to cope with living. A person with clinical depression may feel overwhelmed and hopeless.

Sadness is an ongoing disappointment gone unresolved, and everything upsetting tends to resemble each previous event.

Depression is the end result. A compilation of "smaller" events, disappointments, "hiddens" and unspoken experiences. Clinically - it's a whole other word.

Oddly enough, sadness, gone unchallenged, can become a bizarre comfort zone for some.

Sadness = personal failures, challenges, change, reluctance

Depression = caused by external sources, places, people, events. (although some talk about some chemical imbalance theory as a cause, but only if you're rich and your parents have lots of money)

Someone that feels sad about something may cry, feel tired and listless.
When someone has moderate to severe depression they feel powerless, hopeless, they may have slowed physical movements, decreased interest in personal hygiene and difficulty concentrating and directing attention.
Another main difference is that the symptoms of sadness do not last so long ,as oppose to depression where they become prolonged and exaggerated.

There's not much especially when you misspell 'depression' as 'dipression'. It's sad some people just can't spell, even with a 'spell check' right before their eyes.
"I'm do sad", oops, I mean "I'm so sad"or am I depressed?

Depression is chronical, and happens to the depressed person due to an imbalance of their hormones. Sadness usually comes and goes.
