The Yankees top pick, Ian Kennedy, is a finesse pitcher, not really a power pitcher, so they probably saw something that they didn't like and decided to wait or not sign him at all. I'm pretty sure their later picks were also pitchers so they probably didn't like what they saw from them. Plus, drafting isn't really the Yankees thing, although the farm system has gotten better over the last few years, as evidenced by the emergence of Robinson Cano, Melky, and even Scott Proctor.

Because they didn't make really fantastic picks, and also their main concerns are the current season and playoffs at the moment. Their organization doesn't concentrate nearly as much as others on developing young talent because they tend to buy out the current superstars instead.

Because the Yankee's dont need any depth. If someone gets injured they just trade/buy someone else. EX. Bobby Abreu
