This conflict precedes 1948 by a few millenia.
Here's the thing, Abraham and Sarah disbelieved and disobeyed God when they were told they would become parents, so they grew impatient and Abraham slept with Haggar, their maidservant, giving birth to Ishmael. Later, Sarah had a son of her own, named Issac. Ishmael and Haggar were banished, and Ishmael became father of the Muslim people, Issac became father of the Jewish people, and they've been bickering and arguing ever since.
Round about 0-33 AD, God came to earth to fulfill His Holy testament and unite His people, but silly us, some didn't listen, so then His followers got involved.
Then the great prophet of God Muhammad was born, said and wrote a lot of beautiful and wonderful things about everyone getting along and loving God together, and was promptly ignored by most as well.
So basically, Christians, Jews, and Muslims have been fighting over a speck of desert for thousands of years because they don't freaking listen.
Yeah, but that 1948 thing, that's called the spoils of war, get used to it.

Palestine was a region within several empires--Roman, Byzentine, Ottoman, British, and others--from 70CE until 1947. It included Israel, TransJordan, and the disputed territories. 80% of this land was given to the Hashemites and closed to all Jewish immigration. The remainder was called Palestine. At this point, the only "Palestinians" not Muslims, but Jews. The Arabs used this term to distuinguish Arabic Jews from European Jewish immigrants.
In 1947, the UN partitioned Mandatory Palestine into Arab and Jewish states. The Arabs refused, and on the day Israel declared herself independent, four Arab countries invaded the fledgling state and got their asses whooped.
There was never, in the course of human history, an independent nation-state called Palestine. It was never more than a region within other Empires.
Is that the answer you are looking for, or are you just here to delegitimize Israel?

Good question.
Palestine was ruled by the Turkish Empire for more than 300 years. The term state did not exist in most of the world up to 1800. Most of Palestine population was made of Christians and Muslims. Palestine was named by the Romans and after ww2 the British created the new state of Palestine in 1918 and there was a Palestinian government and Banks and money and constitution that government was put under the league of nation mandate up to 1948. Palestine state was forced to be divided in 2 states one called Palestine for the native ppl and one called Israel for the immigrants. See what some Jews say about the Issue:http://www.nkusa.org

Im not sure about the exact and specific borders and nations at the time that israel was allowed to take over and basically push palestininan people off their land, farms, homes etc. I did not study middle eastern history in college, and the history has been given a spin to make Israel look better than it is, so most of us dont really have access to non-spin info unless they look harder. I personally do not respect what was done to the palestinian people in order for Israel to exist. That being said, I dont think this a issue about the Jewish religion or people. Its an issue of the illegitimate occupying power in the region. It is about borders, violence and politics.

You have it all wrong. Palestine was divided into Israeli and Palestinian sectors, Israel got about half, Palestine got about half. The Palestinians were extremely pissed that they had to give even an inch away, so they got a coalition of Arab nations to invade Israel to kill the jews. Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, and Syria all invaded Israel. Israel single handedly defeated them all, and took all of the Palestinian's land for compensation for their trouble.

Imperialism, Fundamentalism and just plain old politics. If it wasn't for the Holocaust; then there wouldn't have been such a huge movement for Israel to be recreated in a part of land that the Israelis were biblical kicked out of by God himself.
As for anyone that thinks the Palestinians were being selfish; how would you like to be occupied by an oppressive Imperial force and then have your Holy land chopped up to accommodate a group of people that were all being relocated to that area?

Palestine was a British mandate - it got given to them to rule by the Ottoman Empire at the end of world war one as reparations, but the British got sick of the restless and unruly people, as well as the very high cost in military personnel needed to run the place, so gave it to what are now the Israelis. Of course it wasn't theirs to give to anyone, but that's imperialism for you.
