I am from texas where we have many creeks and rivers. Most people here consider a creek to be a flowing, narrow body of water that could be crossed easily by walking. A river is wider and deeper body of water that requires swimming, or some form of floatation device to cross. These are the distinctions that we texans use.

A river refers to a larger stream of water - something you can put a boat in. A creek is normally much smaller, a tributary to the river. You also have streams, brooks, kills, prongs, runs, branches, forks, ditches, etc.

It is an entirely arbitrary distinction. Nothing whatsoever separates them.
And Dbl Monday, you should be aware that there are numerous creeks in the world that have rivers as their tributaries. Have a look at the link below if you don't believe me.

creek--narrow inlet on seacoast
river--large, natural stream of water; copious flow
stream--flowing body of water or other liquid; steady flow
So the difference between a stream and a river is a steady flow versus a copious flow, but the difference between a river and a creek is it's location, according to this stupid dictionary.
