Does it have to be removed after a certain amount of time (hours, days), or can it be left on indefinitely?

Spirit Gum is vile stuff, and should be avoided whenever possible. It's really a holdover from an era when makeup techniques were pretty pre-historic. There are surgical adhesives that hold hairpieces in place FAR better, with less skin irritation; and they're easier to get off afterwards.

Unless you're wearing a false beard/moustache in a show where you also have to move very vigorously, the best thing you can use is toupee tape. This is a super-adhesive two-sided tape. You apply one side to the inside of the hairpiece, slap the thing on your face, and there it stays.

If you're talking about spirit gum, it will eventually wear itself off as it is not a very dependable adhesive. Especially if you are moving a lot, sweating, or under hot lights. However, even the medical strength adhesives can wear off after a few hours. The adhesive may stay on your skin while the object being adhered will come loose. Most adhesives wont stay on the skin for more than a few days under normal circumstances.
