At the younger end of that spectrum (2nd-4th grades), I can recall liking the Laura Ingalls Wilder books, "Harriet the Spy" and other books by the same author, the Lloyd Alexander books, and the original "Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling. I also really liked "James and the Giant Peach" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." On a more eccentric note, I was fond of a book called "Bring 'Em Back Alive" by a writer whose name was I think Frank S. Buck; he traveled all over the world collecting exotic animals for zoos. (Pangolins, spitting cobras, etc.) By the time I was in 6th grade I was really into long-but-fun books like "The Hobbit" and "The Once and Future King", either of which I bet would be a hit with kids who have made it through the long Harry Potter books.

Min really was The Spinning Tops of Naples, I read it over and over, but it's been out of print for years.
Currently I'm pretty hip to what kids like, I'd say Among the hidden and its sequels, Maniac McGee for the 7-12 group.

I was a big Babysitters Club fan. I also got into some older books like Nancy Drew and the Bobbsey Twins because my mom had a bunch from when she was a kid.
