Oh man, that happened to me...My check card was stolen, and I didn't know it and I also didn't have cash. So when the waitor came back saying my card didn't go through, I asked him to re swipe it. He tried it like 6 more times and it never worked. So I called the number on the back and it said I had somewhere around -$500. (I had overdraft protection which allowed me to take an additional 500 out past a zero balance).

Basically, I gave all of my information and promised that I would be back by later that day with the money. I even had them call my cell phone in front of them so that they would see I didn't give them a false number. They really appreciated my honesty. I went back that night to pay, and everything was fine.

My checking account on the other hand was screwed for a LONG time...

Has not happened to me. If you don't have a credit card then I would guess it would be up to the manager/owner. Some might work with you on it and some i can see would call the police...because it's the same as stealing.

You'll find that, if you explain your situation calmly, and ask the restaurant for you to leave to get money and promptly return to pay, they'll let you do it. Many restaurants are quite accommodating and understanding; in larger cities, they may ask for a copy of your driver's license.

Or, if you're with someone, you can ask them to wait at the restaurant while you run to an ATM, or home to get your wallet, if it's nearby.

Use one of my credit cards, of course.
