Because according to the rules of English, you should never start a sentence with a number unless it's spelled out.

Also, certain adjectives just look better when spelled out. Which looks better: "Thousands," or "1000s"?

Besides, what numbers could possibly be giving people problems when it comes to spelling?

Good question. It might be because people rarely or ever start a sentence with a the number form.

It's what you write on your checks. *shrug* I write two checks per year these days, do all other payments online. My auto insurance company sux.
