That depends completely on what kind of Mexican food you order. Don't be fooled into thinking that americanized or "tex mex" style (or even worse... Taco Bell... shudder) junky, starchy, fatty food is really Mexican. The "Mexican" food served in most American restaurant chains originated from low-budget cuisine in some of the most economically depressed areas of Mexico, which happen to be the areas along the U.S. border, and then they have been degraded even further to make them as cheap as possible to serve in the American fast food market. But just like food from any other country, there are many choices and many different kinds of regional cuisines in Mexico, so if you are smart about it and select carefully you could have a very good, healthy meal.
For example, Vera Cruz style Mexican food, from the coastal area, emphasizes fresh seafood, often grilled and served with fresh lime, and includes a lot more fresh vegetables. Or in several regions you can have soft (steamed, not fried) tacos made with fresh corn tortillas, and filled with grilled shrimp, chicken, or lean beef, with shredded cabbage and fresh salsa. So it sounds like maybe you need to look around for a more upscale and sophisticated Mexican restaurant in your community, or some good cookbooks to make healthier Mexican food at home? Authentic Mexican food is definitely NOT just greasy fried foods and refried beans, and the healthier variety prepared from fresh, unprocessed ingredients also tastes really, really good!

Is Mexican food healthy? Apparently not. The Center for Science in the Public Interest's highly publicized 1995 report on Mexican food told us that it's loaded with fat and sodium. But exactly what "Mexican food" was the CSPI discussing? The report focused on popular American restaurant chains such as Chi-Chi's and my old friend El Torito, and not on the food of Mexico, which is an exquisite and varied cuisine full of high-fiber complex carbohydrates, vegetables, and pungent fresh flavors. Indeed, it's a well-rounded cuisine with all the makings of a healthy diet.
So it seems that there are two "Mexican foods": the traditional cuisine that's low in fat and rich in nutrients, and the Americanized version. Believe it or not, the latter can easily be made lighter and more nutritious. On the following pages, I'll introduce you to both types of cuisine, and show you how the elegant flavors of Mexican cooking make up for all the fat we take away.

I'm the chef at a Mexican restaurant outside of Philly & we use tons of fresh vegetables for our dishes. In Mexico almost all the food is prepared fresh with what is available at the market. If you feel that your local establishment is only serving carbs, it might be time to find a new favorite.

WHAT?! First of all rice and beans are not veggies!!
OK, I don't know what Mexican Food you are eating but I know for a fact, growing up with extremely Mexican parents that is is REALLY healthy, if prepared right. there are alternatives to sodium, fat, and sugars. Mexican food isn't as greasy as people make it out to be. It is very good for you, if you eat right, don't stuff yourself and limit ingredients like Oil, Lard, Salts and Bullion and what not.
man whoever is making your Mexican food is disgracing it

It can't be bad for you. Look at those Mexican's running across the US border. Man can they run!!! They're like olympic athelets. And do you see the moves on some of them when the border patrol tries to stop them??? Wow....they look like professional football players.....sometimes it take three or four border patrol guards to tackle those suckers. Mexican food must be very healthy and nutrious.
