judging the fact we still have young men register for a draft, it tells me there are not going to be people lining up to defend the country if needed. What does it say about this country if you must force people to defend their own country? The army has fallen short in the recruitment in the regular army, the reserves, and in the national guard. So why won't all of you that profess you would defend our nation rush right down and join up?

Would I defend my country, not any more. I served 2 years in Vietnam, and came home to a very ungrateful nation. It is time for others to step up to the plate.

Sure...and I have...eight years in the Army.

Somebody has gotta defend the privileges and rights that make a 6.3 million dollar football contract possible (and I don't even like football)...or to go or not go to church...or to raise your family the way one sees fit...etc.

Those rights ain't free...somebody's always wanting to ruin it for the rest of us. I understand that some people aren't willing to fight for their rights...that's fine too. I have no problem helping other people when I can...whether they're American, Iraqis, or El Salvadorans.

I don't think that the U.S. will ever see the day where we would be unable to find enough good folks to fight for us...thank goodness.

Yes, I would fight and live for this country. To call Pat Tillman "stupid" for walking away from a million dollar contract to join the army rangers is ridiculous; he loved the USA and he wanted to serve his nation. Unfortunately, he was killed by friendly fire. To call Tillman's actions "stupid" is also being disrespectful to the brave men and women in uniform who sacrifice their lives for freedom (not just ours but for the Iraqis and Afghanis).

I saw a bumper sticker today that I fell in love with....

It said, " America, the land of the free because of the brave"

I may not agree with the war and the way we entered it, but I will always appreciate those who fight in it so my children and my grandchildren can live free.

So to answer your question, yes I would fight for my country.

"Men sleep peacefully in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." - George Orwell

To answer the question: Yes, I would fight for more my country and did for 21 years from the Cold War to the War on Terrorism.

No soldier wants to *die* for his/her country. They'd much prefer to live for their country. Servicemembers (all branches) join for different reasons - college, freedom, history, duty, service, debts, unemployment... it's much like any other large corporation in that regard. Additionally, to say the military "brainwashes you" is a bunch of hogwash. I have met my fair share of liberals, independents, conservatives - basically I have met folks from ALL across the political spectrum. I have met every conceivable religion in the military to include pagans, catholics, baptists, muslims, jews, wicans. I have met folks in the military who are for this war and who are against this war.

You should be grateful there are men and women who are engaged in combat at this moment ensuring terrorists are over THERE fighting THEM rather than over HERE killing YOU.

The muslim extremists will NOT stop if we depart Iraq. They will NOT stop if we depart Kuwait and Saudi Arabia and Egypt and Jordan and all the other muslim dominated countries in the Middle East, North Africa and Asia. They will NOT stop if we stop supporting Israel and give the land to the extremist muslims. They will ONLY stop when their flag is flying over the White House.

Stop appeasement. It's a policy that has proven it's worthlessness when Chamberlain tried appeasing Hitler prior to World War 2 and handed him the Sudatenland in Czechoslovakia. His statement was, "We have peace in our time." Not much longer after that Germany invaded Poland.

All I can say is this...don't run when duty calls.

I would fight for this country if it were attacked. I do not want to go overseas to do it. If I am going to die for this country, I want to do it fighting for my home here. I would not just stand around waiting for someone to take over my town and my way of life here.

I would fight and die for my country and my way of life like I fight everyday for my life (in work, problems, other people, etc).

People like you, are either selfish or cowards.

His name was Pat Tillman (Arizona Cardinals offensive lineman)and he died a hero. true it was friendly fire that killed him, but that in no way diminishes what he did. I would rather fight and live for this country, but what must be , must be, I'd go.

If we are attacked on our soil, yes. My family and friends are worth fighting for even if it means death. That's why we live in free society.
