make sure you vacuum your carpets before hand. use a quality carpet cleaning solution. use fans (keep your windows open) to help with the drying process. make sure it dries completely before putting your furniture back into place (also to decrease the chances of mold).

I wouldn't rent a machine, by the time you buy all the cleaning solutions you need its not worth it ( defoamer, pre-spray, carpet cleaner, spot remover etc...) plus these solutions are not that effective and you have to work harder. I would call a pro in for a price and you will see its not much more expensive then when you rent. And these guys have all the proper equipment and cleaning solutions and you do no work, they do it all. Tip for hiring, I would use a company that has a "Truck Mounted" steam cleaner, these to me are the best cleaning systems. Very powerful. And yes they may try to up sell but just tell them what you want cleaned, no scotch guarding on carpets ( not very effective) no special pet odour removal, ( the cleaning solutions they use is good enough) Most co. will negotiate a decent price, the more rooms you get cleaned the cheaper it should get per room. Save your back and your money and try a reputable company.

Don't rent!
The machines that you rent are expensive, and they only work slightly better than the kind you can buy. I bought a Bissel machine when my daughter was just about three ( a big sick to the stomach problem) for $200 Canadian, and I have used it at least 30 times. Most rental machines cost at least 50 bucks a day. I would seriously reccomend buying one. It is really handy when your dog has an accident, or your kid pukes on the carpet.
I like the Bissel, and I like to use the more expensive allergen reducing cleaning formula with scotchguard in it. It works well.

I have rented a machine(and bought some solutions) from Home Depot. It did wonders. First of all, it was cheap and the carpets never looked better.
Be sure to turn up the water heater as hot water will clean carpets better.

I would use a steam carpet cleaner. No chemicals or suds to mess with, won't make anyone sick, dries faster and looks fantastic when done. Buy one, they are reusable.
