Because they are cowards. They use innocent people as human shields to attack other innocent people. They don't wear uniforms and they don't stand up like brave soldiers declaring their intent. They duck and cover and then blame their targets for making them victims.
There is nothing more despicable as a coward who murders and then cries foul when free people fight back against them.
Terrorists, by their very nature, ferment strife and bloodshed; one atrocity after another in an endless circle of violence. They use religion, ideology, politics, and human emotions like envy, avarice, and hate, to manufacture more killers for their heroic struggle against civil liberty.
Terrorists are worse than evil animals, so they don't think like humans. They are like viruses invading a healthy body and hence deserve some critical measures. If you don't kill them quickly, they'll kill you.
Watch word: Search for terrorists today and exterminate them!
Don't fill guilty doing this, it's self-defence - it's a must-do.

war is like any other fight. you fight to win. we, as Americans, use specific rules, while others do not. i don't fault them for that. It's not right and fair to do what they're doing, but that's the nature of war. Fight to win by any means necessary...
look back to revolutionary times. army's used to stand in front of each other on an open field and shoot. the army with the most men standing at the end of the fighting won. That was a very stupid and costly way to fight a war. Now we know better, and use strategy and tactics to win a battle. The terrorists are doing the same thing, only they're using different tactics. Do i agree with them, NO! But that's the road they've chosen. Now we just need to find a way to defend against their tactics and mount an even better offense.

I suspect that, like any army, they are using whatever tactics are most effective to meet their military and strategic goals.
Many armies, including the I.R.A. in Ireland and our own American Continental Army (during the Revolutionary War) used tactics other than marching an army out onto an open field of battle and were called terrorists for it. One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter, who says you get to decide? During the Revolutionary War, American commanders like Adam Stephen and Ethan Allen were accused of terror tactics and ungentlemanly warfare for using their preferred "frontier tactics" rather than meeting the larger British forces face-to-face. Now, I suspect you probably don't know very much about the American Revolution so I am willing to give you the benefit of the doubt here but, you aren't accusing those patriotic commanders of being anything less than real men are you?

Put yourself in their shoes. You are fighting the greatest military machine in the history of the world. You can't match them on weaponry, you can't fight a war of attrition , you can't out spend them. How do you beat them ?
answer: You let them beat themselves.
The real goal of terrorism is to destroy the very fabric of America and the way every day Americans go about their lives. Remember it's not called terrorism by accident. If you can get into a peoples head and keep them scared there is a posibility that you can defeat them. The way you win a war against terrorism is to accept the fear and not allow it to interfere in your everyday activities.
Fear is the coin of the realm for terrorists, stop acting afraid and the coin has no value.
In business there is a well known idea called ROI- return on investment
Terrorism is a great return on investment. How much did it cost Osama to raze the WTC ? What is the cost to the US economy as a result of that, ?
war in Iraq, Airlines going bankrupt, heightened security , actual loss of property and wages. the list goes on
So what was the ROI ? 10,000,000 % ?
we have it in our power to significantly reduce that percentage. After all it's not how you die that counts it's how you lived.

If one conceed that the Islamic groups are agents of the various Islamic countries then one has to understand that these same nations have tried on four different occasions to kick the west out of the Middle East. On each of those occasions, all direct attacks, they got beaten badly. The have taken up arms in this protracted war because it is eaiser for them to slip into the crowd. What needs to be done is exactly what we are doing, address it as a police/crime issue and keep chipping away at 'em until we have 'em all.

Because they don't have an army. Terrorists are extremists, meaning that out of their country's population, they represent only a small percent. It has nothing to do with faith or manliness, it's all about strategy.
If you really want an answer, check out guerrilla warfare on wikipedia. If you asked this just to rant or make yourself feel superior then you're woefully ignorant.

No, it's against their faith to fight anyone at all. They've twisted the religion to their own ends, but then again isn't that the problem with most organized religion in the first place? They're far too easily morphed into a madman's reality and way of thinking if he can get enough people to believe with him.

Because they know guerrilla tactics are the most successful way of confronting a superpower with a large standing army. I realize this isn't the answer you were looking for but it's the truth, regardless.

Because it's easier to attack in small sizes. If they can get by undetected and directly attack us on our homefront, they'll be pretty effective in generating terror, hence the reason why they're called terroists and not soldiers.
