It's a 2 stroke, so there is no crankcase oil!

The oil for a 2 stroke engine is normally mixed with the gas. However the transmission does take oil.

I am a journeyman and have over 15 years in with GM. Start with a compression test as that will tell you if the head gaskets are good or not. The 3.1 liter engine does have a history of intake gaskets leaking. If you inspect the 4 outside corners of the intake you may find coolant leaking. If that is the case, you will need to replace the intake gaskets. While the intake is off, reseal the cap that is the oil pump drive off the camshaft. It is right below the thermostat housing and you may find that it is leaking oil. You must completely flush the crankcase to get all the coolant out or bearing damage will happen. I believe flat rate time on that job is approx 6 hrs. Also, The intake and exhaust pushrods are different lengths and if you mix them up, the engine will not start, or have a bad missfire that may damage the valves. Get a manual for this engine and you will do just fine. Bleeding the air from the cooling system is also a special proceedure but is easily done if you follow the instructions. Good Luck.

There is an oil heighth check bolt on the clutch cover(the right crankcase cover,it is a 10mm head. The head of that bolt, also has phillips(+) slot built into it.Remove the bolt, watch for the copper washer(DO NOT LOSE THIS WASHER).Using a good quality Motorcycle 4-stroke oil in the crankcase, have a friend hold the motorcycle in the upright position.Fill the crankcase until oil starts flowing from the oil check heighth hole, let any excess drain out through that hole.Re-install bolt with copper washer and DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN BOLT,JUST SNUG, it can be stripped if overtightened.Go ride the bike through the gears,TAKING IT EASY,then recheck oil level and add if necessary.

Most 2 Stroke motorcycles (excluding mopeds and scooters) do have a crankcase and use 4 stroke motor oil. Your cr250 takes less than 1 qt. Buy a quart of oil and you'll have enough to do an oil change.
