For the same reason they don't consider chess a sport: Ignorance, they need to see sweat to consider it a sport. Plus they are probably jealous because they can't swim. Good swimmers appreciate the sport.

I have never seen anybody thinks that swimming isn't a sport and I think that swimming is the best sport at all. About people in your school, I guess they swim to enjoy only.

Of course it's a sport. I think some people fail to believe it falls in to the category of a sport because the injury risk is less. You really don't see many injuries that are direct results of a race. For anyone who doubts its value as a sport, here you go as defined by Encarta-
[pasted]
"sport [ spawrt ]
noun (plural sports)
Definition:
1. competitive physical activity: an individual or group competitive activity involving physical exertion or skill, governed by rules, and sometimes engaged in professionally ( often used in the plural )

Swimming is a tough sport. Ever swam a mile? That is a major workout.
Swimming is a sport like track and field events are sports. And those are sports.

Very simple, They Cannot Swim...I have been swimming since I was 7 years old. High School and scholarsip at the University of Arizona. Quick Story...At the pool one day during High School, 3 football players were making fun at me, they in turn pushed me into the 16ft pool and pulled me to the pool bottom and were not letting go. In fact they took turns diving down and switched. After about 2 minutes underwater I held onto the Quaterback so that he could not surface. I waited till he started with the "noise" of needing air. I let go. After that, they were my friends..TRUE STORY

It is because a very small amount of schools don't have pools therefore no swim team. And the only big time for swimming is during the Summer Olympics.

Really I do horseback riding and barely anyone not even my own mother believes its a sport. Just tell them at first and then if they still don't believe you ignore them. Also say "Why is it in the Olympics then?" I don't know who could be ignorant enough not to believe swimming is not a sport but oh well.

Yes, it is. Some people think swimming isn't a sport because it's not like baseball, soccer, or basketball where people play in big games and all that stuff.
