There are lots of great places in Japan. I've been here for over 2 years and I am always intrigued by the wonderful sites here.

Tokyo--Great shopping, bars/restaurants in Shibuya, Shinjuku and Roppongi, other places too, tourist sites like the Tokyo tower, Tokyo Bay, maybe even Tokyo Disney Sea.

Kyoto--Ancient capital. Tons of Temples. My favorite is the Gold Pavilion--Kinkakuji

Nara--Also an ancient capital. Has old temples and a famous deer park.

Hiroshima-Peace Park is moving. Nearby Miyajima Island is also very beautiful.

Fukuoka (Kyushu) and Sapporo (Hokkaido)--Both are big cities with their own unique culture and history. Lots to do and very enjoyable.

Mt. Fuji--Speaks in itself. Wonderful place to relax. There are several onsens in the area.

i think visiting Japan is an awesome idea. It's the most greatest experience ever if you get to go. People there are so nice and wonderful. Everyone dresses in style and is in physically good shape. I haven't been to Tokyo but i heard it's a good place to go. Hiroshima, the famous place of the atomic bombing, is probably a good place to go. Kobe is the one i've been to. Kobe is a pretty city, you can see the biggest bridge in the world called the pearl bridge and some other name which i did get to see. There's always somethin to discover there in Japan. Everywhere you go in Japan you'll enjoy. Another interesting place is Nara the ancient city which i've been to. It use to be the capital of Japan then it moved to Kyoto and now Tokyo. So yeah go for it while you have the chance. You'll love it...cause i sure did.

I say yes if your intenet is to learn or experience what Japan is really like.
I say no if your intent is to nanpa or look for JDM parts. If you do not understand nanpa or JDM, then you can ignore my sentence.

With a JR Rail pass you can see most of Honshu, or at least go to Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto in a 4 or 5 day period.

Tokyo is actually made up of 23 city wards. I always suggest to my friends and family who come to visit to go to the following places

Tsukiji Fish market - because you will be jet lagged at 0500
Meiji Shrine - must see
Harajuku - more modern Japan adjacent to Meiji Shrine. See the goths and cosplay on a Sunday afternoon.
Roppongi Hils City View - see most of Tokyo from the sky
Asakusa - shrine, shops, make a prayer/wish
Sengakuji shrine - grave site of the 47 Ronin
Ueno - The old Tokyo
Akihabara - electronis, but more manga these days
Imperial Palace
Shibuya - ultra modern young person Japan.
Many of my friends like to try and do the Lost in Translation tour. - They rent the DVD and then try and find all of the places in the movie. Although I hear that the Park Hyatt Shinjuku is going to rennovate the bar.

Yokohama:
China town,
check out the cemetary for foriegners (Edo period),
Minato Mirai

Kamakura - once the military capital of Japan. Place is fille with traditonal stuff to see

Kyoto - traditional Japan in it's best presentation

Osaka - Osaka castle was worth my 4 hours.
Where to stay depends on how much Japanese you can or cannot speak and how much money you have to burn.
Not much money but some Japanese skills will allow you to sleep at capsule hotels. Or make use of local travel agencies to book low cost business hotels.

If you can afford it, sure. It is an expensive place to live or visit because of the yen:dollar ratio. Also, it would be good to take a conversational Japanese class. Remember, you can't look up the signs to see what they mean. So, it's difficult to find your way around. On the other hand, many people there can speak some English, and they are polite and helpful. If I were visiting, I'd go to Tokyo and definitely see Mt. Fuji.

Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka are the places you may like to visit. You may purchase a JR Rail Pass for 7 days if you come from the other country. Then you can enjoy to take JR train, MRT, and bus to go any where from east Japan to west Japan. Good Luck.

It would be a great place to visit. You can spend a lot of time in and around Tokyo. Be sure to visit Hiroshima and the observation deck in the Umeda building in Osaka. If you like Hello Kitty you can visit Puroland in Tama.

Having been there I wouldn't hessitate to recomend that you visit - just brush up as much as possible on your japanese!

I like Kyoto. VERY easy to get around and the central shopping district is a fun time.

The historical sites are amazing and, again, very easy to get to. I walked almost everywhere and found that the taxi's area much cheaper than I was originally told!

Yes, you definately should, if you have the means. I used to live there and I loved it. I want to go back really bad. I would recommend, Tokyo (Of course) and Okinowa as my top two cities. I would also go to the country, it is beautiful there.
