Stay clean.
You may have to work up to a good job. Desired employers have the pick of candidates and can check references, so building a good background can offset your past naughtiness.
Otherwise, list self-employment like someone said already. Handyman, Wood Monger, or even say you had a cash job to eat up a bad time slot.
Many people with a checkered past choose to work for themselves, anyhow.
Oh, and stay clean, it's easier to hold a job when there is no reason to fire you.

Ask if there is concern regarding the gap. Then share, if need be, that the gap was a time where you spent time growing and developing personally. Now you are a person returning to the work force. Keep it light. You may only want to ask just to get a feel if it really is a problem or not. You could be over worried which would be normal.

in this situation.... honesty is the best policy! if you lie to potential employers, there will be even more consequences to face when they find out you submitted a fraudulent application.
another thing, more often than not... if you did any jail time, this is reflected on your credit report. my bf and i are landlords and we have to request credit reports for prospective tenants. one lady told us she has some credit issues because someone stole her identity a few yrs back. when we ordered her credit report, it stated she lived at ______ correction facility from one date to another.
also, depending on what type of industry you apply for a job in... some places will do background checks. for the "short stays at employers", if you weren't fired.. you can say it was temporary work. that is usually ok (that's what an HR person once told me).
it is going to be difficult for you to start over, but covering up will only make things worst.
good luck and congrats for being clean and sober for over a yr!

I agree with what someone else said... claim self employment for temp. gaps or claim you worked for some company you know went out of business. I was a sales associate for an appliance store that went out of business so instead of sales associate since theres no way to really verify sales manager sounds better on a resume LOL

be truthful. most employers do background checks nowadays and they will find out that you were in jail. tell them you were in jail on a DUI but have been clean and sober. take responsibility for your actions.

Honesty is what you need, and when you confess that it mean you've got ride of your bad habits.
If you get a job, prove that you have change to a new man, stay whit that employment for a good period of time and seek promotion if that's possible, that will push you up.
