In the cases of countries in places like the Middle East and Africa, there are lots of problems with the borders themselves. They were set based on the political desires of outsiders like Great Britain and France with no regard for the people living in the countries. Iraq is one example of this. Outsiders drew borders grouping people together that are not from the same culture and do not want to live together. Other people were split apart. Some of what is going on now is a re-alignment of political boundries to allow for the self determination of different groups.
