If someone sends you a Microsoft Word document and you want to edit it but it is locked (example: When I click on edit and scroll down to select all it won’t let me and it’s not even highlighted) how can I either unlock it or copy it to a new word document?

Until the sender unlocks it, you cannot edit it.

You can do a copy and paste it to another document, but that would just be a picture, not a document you can change.

Ask you friend to send it again as an unlocked file. If you are changing a file that has been locked it can be deemed to be tampering with intellectual rights, and it might get you into trouble. If the other person gives you permission by sending it as an unlocked file, then you won't have to worry about this technical issue.

Click on Tools - There should be an option to unprotect the document. You may want to try that after you save a copy for yourself.

Try opening the document with another text editor. I might work. Try opening it with Wordpad. Or try with notepad, but then all the formatting will go.
