They occur at the base of the intrusives because Ni-Cu deposits are found in layered intrusions, stocks and ultramafic sills and flows. These deposits are important sources of chromium, titanium, and vanadium.

Basically right.
Platinum and chromium minerals are heavy, and sink to the bottom of magma bodies. Furthermore, there are some minerals that don't "fit" / dissolve as well into the surrounding minerals, causing them to seperate out from the melt to a greater degree.
