They are made of aluminum, but are coated with a magnetic coating which is a thin plastic layer with iron particles embedded in it, just like a cassette tape or floppy disk. They are not made of silicon, which is not magnetic and is used for the manufacturing of semiconductors, not hard drives.

Ferrous metal, so the magnetic properties work to store data.
Mine are shiny polished, chromed, steel discs.
I take it apart all the time. Of course I am telling you about the Microsoft loaded drive, trashed by the Virus Magnet!
