John Stewart , the black GL, was originally Hal's replacement, after Guy Gardner (his first replacement) got injured. John only wore the ring in one issue of GL at that time, and made one appearance in Justice League (110) after Hal slipped in the shower and knocked himself unconcious.

IN 1984, Hal quit the GL Corps to be with Carol, and John became his offical, permanent replacement. He remained as GL, marrying Katma Tui, until the rings were all destroyed along with the Battery in the final issue of GL Corps.

Then he became a Darkstar for a while. Got paralyzed, healed, paralyzed again, healed again. Kyle made him his replacement when he went out into space to recruit a new Corps, and he's been a GL ever since.

Unless he got paralyzed again last week. You never know.

The Green Lantern Reynolds portrays, Hal Jordan, pre-dates John Stewart in comics by about 30 years. Jordan's replacement was Guy Gardner, and Stewart was Gardner's, and then even Kyle Rayner was Stewart's. The Green Lantern you're thinking of, Stewart from the JL cartoon, is in the middle of these guys. Hal Jordan, the character in the film, was the first human inducted into the Green Lantern Corp and has always been known as the greatest of the Green Lanterns. Edit: Also, Hal Jordan is the current Green Lantern.

Green Latern was first created in the 1940's with the secret identity of Allan Scott and weakness that his ring could not effect anything made from wood. Around 1950, super hero comics sales declined and all except Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman were dropped.

Early 1960s DC recreated Green Latern (and a lot of other heroes) with Hal Jordan as his real name and a weakness to the color yellow. During the late 60s the Green Latern series had a string of stories drawn by Neal Adams that dealt with racism, drugs and other important social issue.

Later, when sales declined again in the late 70s, DC tried to make GL more socially relevant again by moving his power ring to Jon Stewart, who was black. Did not wotk, and so Jordan returned.

Later in a relaunch the moved the ring to Kyle Rider (white) and made him a "novice" for a different style of adventure. While Jordan became a villian for a time before becoming the new Spector.

They didn't. There have been a total of five well known Green Lanterns, John Stewart (The black one) was one of four Green Lanterns (On Earth) active at one time (Two of which created in the seventies). The most commonly recognized one is Hal Jordan (One of the four white ones).

Because there are thousands of Green Lanterns not just Hal Jordan. Some of them are white, some are black, some are aliens.

I was at 6 flags this past weekend. The Green Lantern was out in the morning and it was a white guy. I saw him later that afternoon and it was a black guy. That doesn't answer your question, but I thought it was a relevant story.

I think they were trying to make the cartoon more politically correct, but I do think they should keep the characters close to how they were originally created. There were plenty of good black superheroes and they should make updated cartoons starring them if they want to be showcase blacks. (Luke Cage, even though Marvel, would make a great new cartoon!) And by the way, I am not at all racist. I'd just like the to see the characters remain somewhat close to the way they were originally written and drawn.
