Yes it is...
As with Demerol, morphine or even heroin, codeine is classified as a Schedule 2 narcotic. Although codeine can be found in many cough syrups, codeine found in pill form is only available through prescription. Physically and emotionally addictive, codeine acts as a "block" to pain receptors in the brain and affects the brain by producing an enjoyable and euphoric feeling. It is this feeling that people continue to recreate, time and again. Unfortunately for them, that initial feeling is rarely able to be recreated, but the codeine addict continues to try by increasing the amount of codeine they are using and the frequency in which they use it. The end result of this obsessive thinking is the creation of a greater tolerance to the drug, as well as, an addiction.
Codeine is mainly utilized by physicians to reduce pain in many of their patients. The process of addiction is basically the same in this case, as mentioned above. The patient takes the prescription medication for the pain, the pain is partially relieved and they experience that pleasurable feeling. In an attempt to completely relieve the pain or to recreate the emotional pleasure, the person increases their dosage of codeine. The results are usually the same. The pain is never completely eliminated and that pleasurable feeling is never recreated, but tolerance and addiction is developed.
If you or someone you know is experiencing blurry vision, sweats, constipation or itchiness, these are signs that an addiction to codeine may be present. Effects of Codeine Addiction
In most cases, codeine addiction is the direct result of the medication being appropriately prescribed for legitimate pain. The individual rarely had any preconceived plans to abuse the medication, but two factors came into play. The individual may experience some relief from the drug, in conjunction with experiencing that euphoric feeling produced by the codeine. Whether it is because of the reduction in pain or an elevation in pleasurable feelings, the person begins to take additional codeine. This decision is usually made independent from the physician who prescribed the medication. Before the person knows it, they find themselves with a mental obsession regarding codeine and cravings for more.
People have also been known to take narcotics or opiates to deal with emotional problems they may be experiencing. The same holds true with codeine. The only thing narcotics, opiates or codeine provides for emotional problems is to "mask or numb" the actual feeling. Although the person may not experience the feeling at a particular time, in most cases, it is just exasperated by not expressing or learning how to effectively cope with the presenting issue.
Lastly, people have been found to mix alcohol with codeine to accentuate the feeling of euphoria. They like to refer to the mixture as a "cocktail". What this creates is the potential for an overdose and should be avoided at all costs. Narcotic painkillers (like codeine) are incredibly addictive!
Talk to your mom, and if need be, find a local support group in your area.
I've been addicted to painkillers before (I called them my happy pills because I was a TOTAL b*tch w/out them), and I had to go into rehab to get off them.
It will be a LONG HARD road, but the end results are worth it.
