I have a friend who is a little over weight and she has been starting to basically starve herself.

Actually, I read that all that does is make your body go into starvation mode and therefore hold onto what little fat it's got (cause when you're starving to death, that's what your body uses for fuel). To get her to stop, tell her that if she actually does lose the weight, she'll eventually gain it all right back when she begins eating normally again, and she'll be losing muscle to top it off. Tell her veggies. She can eat most veggies (save the starchy ones like potatoes) until she explodes--they're GOOD for her and won't make her fat. Fruits too (well, most fruits...bananas actually have some fat in them). And tell her to drink water like it's going out of style--8+glasses a day, it'll flush the fat out of her system.

But if it really IS anorexia, then she's got a bigger problem, because that's 90 % psychological. Good luck. I hope you can convince her not to do that. Her health isn't worth a few pounds. Tell her she's beautiful exactly the way she is, because she is. Everybody is perfect exactly as they are and anybody who thinks otherwise isn't worth having as a friend anyway.

She'll be glad she's got a good friend like you. :)

NO she will be fine. Lots of water, one meal a day of lean protien like chicken or turkey and once you get to a normal weight (few weeks) - the rest of your life eat 80% very healthy and 20% of whatever you want. I did this to lose some extra weight and I did just fine.
Some people are so dumb. It's impossible to gain weight during starvation mode. I've said it before: Do the dam research people!!!

If she continues this [dangerous] behaviour, she will not lose weight. Her body will go into starvation mode, where it actually can GAIN weight. Not only is this NOT a safe way to lose weight, but it won't work!

Tell her to work out and eat 2,000 calories a day - or maybe 1,500 calories a day, at the least. This is healthy and will work MUCH better!

yes in the long run she'll lose weight. but it doesnt just melt off itll take a couple weeks, months even to see serious changes, the most shes gunna lose right now is water weight. and makeing her stop is gunna be tricky, people who have eating disorders have it set into their mind not to eat or not to eat so much, trust me i know. the best you can do is talk to her about it, see how she feels and if it turns into somethign serious, find her help.

Talk to her about how what she is doing is scaring you.

btw, infact anorexia/starvation doesnt help you lose weight in the long run... sure, u'll lose weight... but it slows your metabolism down and your body stores more fat... so when you begin eating again you will gain weight rapidly and you most likely will end up worse than from where you began.

It takes a while for the human body to decide that it is starving and begin to consume itself for survival so she will probably not lose weight right away. You should talk to her about doing another diet plan. One that is more healthy and more effective. Feel free to contact me about your progress if you want.

at first she may loose weight pretty quickly but sooner or later she is going to plateau and not look so good. She will loose hair and her nails will become brittel and her skin color will become pale. The hair loss takes a while to happen, maybe 6 months after the upset of not eating, so you may not believe me now, but trust me, I used to be anorexic! Please eat small meals throughout the day and stick to lean meats and veggies: tell that to your friend!!
