I think that in this day and age we want and expect more from life. In the past the relationship may well have died but the woman wasn't really equipped to be self-sufficient and therefore both people stuck it out, along with the fact that divorce wasn't easy either.
I also think that in the past many people got married at a far younger age, when they perhaps hadn't finished growing up, and then grew apart rather than together and didn't have anything in common any more after the children were grown. Add to that the fact that divorce is more socially acceptable these days and that might help explain why older people with a long marriage behind them are getting divorced too.

I wonder if most of the people answering this question r divorced i think not probably not even been married. People get divorced more now because u dont have to stay in an unhappy marriage the views of society on marriage hav changed dramaticaly thus enable women and men who may have years ago felt compelled to "stay and work" at the marriage no matter how miserable they are. Maybe if people hav no knowledge as to a situation they should keep their unjustified prejudices to themselves!!
Yes that was a moan but i get pi**ed off with people makin comments when they havent got a clue just how unhappy and trapped u can feel in a relationship or marriage.

It used to be that marriage was a life-long committment. It also used to be that people only lived to be 60. Some people spend their entire lives committed to the institution of marriage or feel that divorce indicates failure, even when neither spouse is happy. When they look at the rest of their lives, they see that they could live to be 80. A person in their 40's or 50's may think that the next 30 or 40 years are ahead of them and they don't want to continue to be unhappy. It would be wonderful to have your entire life to be happy with someone but it's a rare thing to find sadly. I dont think that anyone takes that decision lightly after being married for so long. It happens because they feel they've done all that can be done to stay in love and realized that they don't want to continue to be unhappy.

Because society has accepted divorce as being ok to do. Many years ago you were looked down on for getting a divorce. Now days if that were true there would be a lot of "bad people" in the world.

Because they stayed married long after the relationship was over. They should have gotten divorced 20 years ago but did stupid things like staying together for the kids. Either that or one has a midlife crisis and screws the whole deal up.

I've thought that myself. My parents got a divorce after 24 years...I was 17 so I wasn't that affected. In my case it had to do with a big change. My dad always worked, my mom was the housewife. The decide to own a restaurant so my mom went from housewife to business partner and my dad couldn't handle it so they fought. I think when a big change occurs one or the other can't hang so they fight...ends in divorce. Some change is good...others may not be so good...it's life.

This is really easy. People don't have to live their whole lives in an unhappy marriage anymore, so once the kids are raised, they walk away. And it's the women who walk, two out of three times. They don't care about money, or prestige, or power. They care about autonomy and peace of mind. They leave to feel good about themselves again. They leave to start over when their partner can't understand that they've had enough of the old way they were living. They leave to marry someone else, or no one else. They leave to keep from jumping off the nearest bridge. They leave to keep from pushing their spouse off the same bridge. THEY LEAVE TO BE FREE!!!

I can't really say I know. But, I think we are living in a very dynamic world now where stress of all kind exsists. We are all looking for ways to live happier lives - nothig is worse that an unhappy marriage. It's easier to remove the most constant source of sress - pain.

til death do us part doesn't seem to hold the same meaning anymore. too many people are looking for the one...or just have unrealistic expectations of marriage. also a lot of people a hundred years ago couldn't afford to get divorced! personally i think that if you can basically get along with someone that's a better basis for a lasting relationship than lust. let's face it we all have bad habits!

We stay together for the children after that many years of marriage we are no longer happy being just content and feel life has so much more to offer us.
