Tatoos are a form of self expression and art. I've got one tatoo and when I got old and wrinkly, the tatoo will just wrinkle and fade with me.

Look back at some of your older photos. Ever think your hair style was funny back then? Ever think the clothes you used to wear were wack? Styles change and so do our tastes. Most of us have many more years left on this earth and will go through many phases in life. How could you ever say that a tattoo is your final choice that you want to have on your body forever? You weren't sure about that hair style or clothes, what about a tattoo? I can tell you this, there is no tattoo that is age-appropriate for an 18 year old that is also age-appropriate for a 40 year old or a 60 year old or 80 year old, etc. If you're young, do you want to wear an old person's tattoo? No. If you're old, do you want to wear a kid's tattoo? No. It's not possible to get a tatto that spans the generations. Also, look around at the folks that have tattoos. They're mostly working at Gadzooks and Hot Topic and other minimum wage jobs. You rarely see tattooed folks in professional bank president jobs, as plant managers, engineers, etc. It may be wrong, but people in general pre-judge tattooed folks when they go to job interviews and stuff. It's hard for them to get the good jobs. There's got to be a better way of expressing yourself than with a tattoo, especially a way that is less harmful to your career and your social life. Just think, you automatically rule out all of the potential girlfriends/boyfriends out there that don't like tattoos. If someone doesn't like tattoos, they won't date someone with them. However, if a person likes tattoos, they would still date someone that didn't have them. Being without tattoos leaves all your options open.

I have a large tattoo of a pegasus on my lower back... it symbolizes power, freedom and flight. The horse is in a rearing position, signaling reaction to possible situations. I could go on and on. First of all, get a tattoo in a place that will NOT sag or wrinkle if that is a fear. Get something that means something to you...or will remind you of a time in your life or an event. Mine is in a place that is only shown to those I want to see it. I am a "white collar" worker and highly educated. I think tattoos are a wonderful form of self expression. So my answer to your question is that the best tattoos MEAN something to their individual owner and THAT my friend... is the point :-)

It depends. Tattoos can be a very personal thing if enough forethought is put into it.
For people who rush out and get tattoos while drunk, without thinking, to look "cool", etc... I agree, what is the point? I love it when people get tribal tattoos (without having anything tribal in their heritage), or Oriental characters without really knowing what they mean...
For others, however, tattoos are a means of personal expression or a way to remember.
I have one tattoo. It is very special to me. It was drawn on my arm by one of my troops who later got out to start a tattoo parlor. It is a skull, wearing a desert camo boonie hat, smoking a cigarette with a pair of crossed M-16 rifles behind the head.
The skull represents SSgt Victor Marvick, a friend of mine who was killed by terrorists in Oct of 1991 while we were stationed together in Ankara, Turkey. The cigarette is a reminder of the 17+ years I smoked, and that I will share the same fate as my friend if I start again. The boonie hat represents my service in the military. Finally, each M-16 represents a full year I have spent in combat zones while serving on active duty.
So, is this something I want on my body when I'm old, grey and wrinkled?
My answer to you. Hell yeah.

Its just a way to express yourself. It makes a lot of statements about the type of person you are. I have two tattoo's, and yes i know they are permanent. But Im one of those people who wants to try everything once (or twice) in life. There are certain areas where you can get tattoos that wont look crappy when you age. Plus with the tattoo's technology (ink/guns), the colors dont run together and it will look better longer.

It's the same as dressing a certain way. What's the point in wearing a shirt with a particular style? It's the way it makes you look . I like the way i look with my tattoo..
However alot of people go with the moment and have just anything tattooed on themselves. As long as you take the time to find something that you'll love for the rest of your life it'll be fine. And it took me a LONG time to find that.

Your body is a temple. How you adorn it and care for it is up to you. I have one tattoo. Its on my left shoulder and it means serenity. Its a physical expression of an inward experience. I do plan to get another one soon. It will represent the addition of my son to my life. I am putting much thought into it. What symbol do I want to represent my 'fiery one'?
By the way, I'm a nurse and work with a couple of nurses that have tat's and their noses pierced.

I can't speak for everyone on why they get there's...However, I got my for a multitude of reasons. I enjoy having permanent art to decorate me. It's something not everyone has and I can personalize to express myself. Also for me, mine is a commitment to my religious beliefs that's always with me. Besides, it makes some really great conversation starters especially since I work with others that have or are going to get one. For me, it's just fun. What about when I get old and wrinkled? Well, i hope that I've chosen places that I won't have to worry about.

It's expression. My tatoos all have a great personal meaning to me. They represent landmarks in my life, so no matter what they look like when I'm 80 I'll still love them.
