I am going back to school shopping this weekend for my son, and I don't want to send him back looking like a nerd. What trends are popular with young boys nowadays??

A collar shirt unbuttoned (short sleeved) over a solid t-shirt and cargo style jeans. Etnie sneakers.

At six years old children are not tuned in to who is a nerd. Buy him nice little shirts and pants and some shoes/sneakers that he loves. Don't "put on him" the thing about needing to be cool. He's only six. When he's old enough to be aware of "cool" he'll let you know what is cool and what isn't. In the meantime, dress him in comfortable, nice-looking, clothes that he's comfortable in and happy to have.

With little kids in first grade you have the luxury of buying them what you want, and sometimes the other mothers will actually follow. They aren't very old when they start wanting clothes like the other kids have. For now, let him be a little, first-grade boy who isn't all into what's "cool". That comes soon than is good for any child these days. Resist it at least for the next two or three years. If mothers don't teach cool, usually kids don't start thinking about it until they're more like 9/10.

You know, most kids in first grade don't really care about what a fellow first grader dresses like. I used to go to school with mis-matched clothes all the time because I was learning to dress myself at that time, and they didn't even care about it. Just keep it simple, jeans, a t shirt with a cute saying on it, and for shoes I recommend Crocs because they are very comfortable and cute.

First grade could have changed since the time I was there, but I'm sure he'll be just fine.

I don't know your budget, but I think polos are always cute.
Maybe Lacoste, Polo Ralph Lauren, or just cheap ones from Mervyns or someplace. They're universal.
Pair them with jeans or cargo shorts, any color.
You could try GAP for kids. Anything there should be fashionable and non-nerdy.
If I had a boy, I would dress him in Burberry. :P I just think everything is SO cute..
It depends on what he likes. Just take him shopping and let him pick out some stuff at reliable stores.

How could he be a nerd? Most first graders can't spell their own name or count to 11 without taking off their shoes . . .

Make him dress like a dork. Then he will appreciate being able to pick his own clothes when he's 10.

It's First grade. Just get him jeans and a t-shirt. You don't have to worry about stuff like that until 3rd or 4th grade.

If you're still concerned with idiotic labels like 'nerd', then you aren't really ready to be a good parent.

You should encourage him to be himself by letting him choose his own clothes. He may look ridiculous at first, but he'll grow out of it.

A boy in the first grade doesn't need to look cool, just his mother...

Star Wars gear never goes out of style, trust me!

But the best thing to do is to take him with you. Then he can pick out whatever he likes. Most likely he'll want s.hit with aliens or dinosaurs on it. That's what I would get, at least.

First Grade, sheesh, slap him, wrap him, send him to school. No really, sorry about that just thought it was funny. Anything from the kids Gap store should be fashionable.
