Don't mess with their pool. You are house sitting, not pool-sitting. Stick to things that you know something about. Don't go on here, listen to, and abide by a wide assortment of B.S. that will cause you problems later.

Can you call the people you are house sitting for? That way you can find out if they have a pool service or what, if anything, they want you to do to the pool. I wouldn't add any chemicals or do anything to the pool without their permission, if possible.

If you have no way of getting in touch with them, you can always take a small bottle of the pool water to a pool store to have it analyzed. That will tell you what you need to clear up the pool. The only problem is they will want to know how big the pool is (in terms of gallons of water) to know what much of what chemical to use.

Better make that phone call!

If you are house sitting then they should have a pool guy coming to clean the pool. As long as you have done nothing to the pool, it is not your responsibility to keep it clean. Unless they left you instructions to clean the pool. otherwise don't worry about it. They are just to cheap to get a pool cleaner.

If they have a pool, surely they already have chemicals to treat their pool. Did they leave you instructions on the pool? Maybe you should contact them before you mess with it very much.

I agree, leave it be. Don't spend your money on their pool. You didn't cause the water to turn green. Know what I mean?

You want to shock the pool which will kill the algea and all bacteria that's probably causing it to look green.
