i really can't stand Ben Afflect. Only good films he was in was Good Will Hunting and Changing Lanes.

josh lucas? looks more like Sawyer in Lost

Van Diesel? leaded or unleaded? he doesn't even look like Kirk£

I can imagine how man people will be offended just by the concept of there being a look into the life of the young James T Kirk without the original cast. But I am afraid William Shatner cannot go back in time to play him and Matt is a damn fine actor and will do credit to the role. The fact that it is being directed by sci-fi director J.J. Abrams who already has a cult following should give the punters some consolation. I just hope Matt gets a chance to rip off his shirt ala Captain Jim and battle with a alien as his proportions are not bad.

Matt Damon as Kirk, you jest.
Damon is not a cad, he's has not exhibited charm in any of his movies.
Even as a young Kirk, the driving forces of his persona will still have to be evident, if this character is not done carefully with a great deal of respect the film will flop!

to be honest, the only reason i would go to see a new Star Trek movie nowadays is if Matt Damon WAS in it!

i enjoyed S.T in my youth, but i think they've pretty much kicked the 'backside' out of it now.

Matt Damon is handsome and talented, and if you were to add Ben Affleck into the mix, then i'd most definitely go see it! they really do work well together,,,the proof is in the pudding, as they say, so check out:

chasing amy
good will hunting
jay and silent bob strike back
glory daze
school ties
dogma
jersey girl
and of course, project greenlight.

shows how well they work together!

lol...actually, I think as far as LOOKS go, Damon and Affleck would be great choices, same goes for chemistry (you can tell they have been friends for a long time) but...Darn I would hate to see those two garner even more respect than they already have. There's just something about both of them that I've never liked, and I don't think either one has a very good stage presence, but when has Hollywood ever listened to me...sigh.

I thought they were going to use Ben for Kirk?

Matt is even worse, they should use someone else dammit..
Like Van Diesel...he'd make a good Kirk No?

I can't think of anyone else more suited to the role of Kirk. Ben Affleck would be okay as Spock, as he generally comes across as emotionless anyway!

Why do they need to put a prequel in to potentially ruin a much-loved series of films and shows? The whole enterprise (no pun intended) reeks of shameless profiteering and (admittedly even though I am not a huge Star Trek fan) I cannot see this film as nessecary to the existing storyline.

Actors can play anything they want, he kinda would suit the role though i reckon, After team america though i would ruin the film by constantly shouting "matt damon" in the cinema though

Oh gawd. And I thought my week was seriously improving. This is just wrong. Perhaps Ben can play a Klingon, and then we can throw in Johnny Depp as Dr. McCoy...that'd be a hoot.
