Its a chemical that combines with water to simultaneously make the freezing point much lower and the boiling point much higher. Most also protect the engine and radiator for oxidation (rusting) and corrosion

Antifreeze or coolant is designed to help protect your cooling system from corrosion, freezing, and overheating. When antifreeze gets weak, it can allow the various parts of the system to begin corroding or rusting. That will not happen in just a few days. It is possible to operate a vehicle with just water in the cooling system, but only as a very short term measure. A normal vehicle using the correct 50-50 mixture of antifreeze and water only needs about 2 gallons of antifreeze. That is about $15 and well worth the protection it provides.

Im guessing your from the city
Antifreeze circulates from the radiator to the engine, it keeps your car from over heating. If in an emergency your antifreeze leaks out of the radiator you can use water, but i recomend not to use water it'll make things rust

Antifreeze does quite a few things:
-keeps engine block from freezing in the winter.
-Lubricates the system.
-Doesn't oxidyde like water does.
-has higher boiling point that regular water.
-Disempates heat beater than water.

Antifreeze is a water-based liquid coolant used in gasoline and diesel engines. Compounds are added to the water to reduce the freezing point of the mixture below the lowest temperature that the engine is likely to be exposed, and to inhibit corrosion in cooling systems which often contain a range of electrochemically different metals (cast iron, copper, tin, lead solder, etc.). ...

Antifreeze keeps your cars coolant from freezing and has anti corrosive chemicals in it to keep your engine clean and in top running form. Your coolant keeps your cars engine components cool and running at their ideal performance temp.

Prevents corrosion, prevents frozen coolant and cracked block, raises the boiling point of the water/antifreeze mixture, makes it easy to determine what's leaking onto the ground, etc

Because different liquid has different freezing point(eg water has a higher freezing point than alcohol) it smart to put some alcohol into the water to lower the freezing point. Coolant is more than anti-freeze so they are other chemicals to help with corrosion and lubrication.

Increases the boiling point of the water in the cooling system to 245 degrees.
Lowers the freezing point of the water in the cooling system to 40 degrees below zero.
Keeps everthing inside the engine from rusting.
Lubricates the water pump.

Antifreeze/Coolant are basically the same thing. It keeps the car from overheating int he summer and freezing up in the winter. Can do without it.
