What, exactly, does Antifreeze do in a car?

Its a chemical that combines with water to simultaneously make the freezing point much lower and the boiling point much higher. Most also protect the engine and radiator for oxidation (rusting) and corrosion

Antifreeze or coolant is designed to help protect your cooling system from corrosion, freezing, and overheating. When antifreeze gets weak, it can allow the various parts of the system to begin corroding or rusting. That will not happen in just a few days. Antifreeze circulates from the radiator to the engine, it keeps your car from over heating. If in an emergency your antifreeze leaks out of the radiator you can use water, but i recomend not to use water it'll make things rust
