I should take and quote Weber's own word as to what constitutes his own understanding and interest in human society is as noted in the first answer, however, I do not intend to accredit it with scientific validity at this point in time.

The ego ideal in every historical context is an expression of mans perfectionism in his relation to his productive reality. Wether or not a human understands those ideals as fact or not is irrelevant to his pursuing them.
