Something that is "gold plated" has gold in it, but not very much. Something that is pure gold (actually all gold has impurities which are rated by Karats, 24 karat being the closest to pure) all the way through. Gold plate is mostly (99%+) some other metal where someone has used electroplating to put a small layer of gold on the outside of the object.

Basically, you submerge the item into a liquid which contains gold salts and then apply electric charges which break down the golds salts and creates micro-thin layer gold that is bonded to the metal.

Gold plated means it have a very, very thin layer of gold over it. Electroplated means it is not real gold but should not tarnish.

Gold will have a "K" after the number indicating the purity of gold. Don't buy anything less than 14K.

Gold plated simply means there's a very thin layer of gold over the piece of jewelery.
