I've known a few who do relatively well. This is for the Dallas area.
The first was a friend who did electrical work for a government airplane contractor. He made about $70K a year.
The second was a lighting designer for a large engineering/architectural firm. He made a bout $96K a year.
The first had about 5 years experience and the second about 15 years experience. I would bet a really good electrical engineer, in a great job, with 15 or more years could earn well over $100K a year.

IMHO, the short answer is no, on average.
But the longer answer on rich is that it is not what you have, it's what you keep. Engineering can pay well. $100k is not unusual. To get 'rich' the best advice is to stay with a company for as long as possible, and sink as much as possible into savings (401K), and hope the company does well. Beyond that it is a matter of circumstance I think. Engineers who are always looking out for ways to make money seem to get lucky, depending on execution.

If you are looking for a job that will make you rich, don't do it. Find a job that you enjoy doing. One that you look forward to doing every day. Money isn't everything.

Good electrical engineers CAN become very well-off, but only if they're innovative and they work hard.
