I haven't seen that episode in such a long time. You mean Rod Serling? He does that on all the episodes.

Was it the episode where she was wrapped in gauge after a face surgery?
If that is the right episode, then she was ugly to them because she looked different . They were aliens. What is "normal" or in that range is what determines the ideal of beauty.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. No matter if you look like what society judges as good looking or attractive, you may still be attracted to someone who is totally off that scale.

The original episode does not have the guy on tv. The remake does. He is like big brother.......spewing propaganda about their society! They segregate the "ugly" people to their own "ghetto". The purpose of the guy on tv was probably to demonstrate how they emphasize looks in their culture. Its supposed to be ironic. In there culture beauty is considered hiddeous and ugly is considered beautiful. Hope it helps!

The significance of the guy making the speech is simply to be the viewer involve in the story and probably to bring the story more easier to the television screen.

He was telling society that everyone must conform to a single idea, a single look, and that the "ugly people" ( i.e, Janet Taylor) would not be tolerated in their midst. The whole episode is about prejudice and intolerance.

I assume by "the guy" you mean Rod Serling? He made witty commentary on every episode, sometimes more than once. He was the voice of reason and wisdom in every episode.

That what is considered beautiful on OUR planet, might be considered ugly on another. The narrator and creator of the show is named..Rod Serling. Not Sterling.

He died several years ago.

It represented a totalitarian society...it gave an
additional scary dimension to the "upside down" world, where
"ugly" is "normal" and "Beautiful" is extremely "ugly".
