For the same reason every female mammal produces milk: to feed its young.

Human beings are the only creature on earth that drinks milk from other animals (with the exception of some domesticated animals which we have trained to do so, such as cats). It's actually a very strange thing.

Every other mammal naturally feeds on its mothers milk until a certain developmental stage, after which point the young creature starts eating regular food and never has milk again.

Human beings are unique in that once our mothers breasts have dried up, we continue to drink milk from other animals.

Somewhere back in history, some human being said, "Hey, why should I have to stop drinking this delicious milk, when I can just steal some from a cow!"

It's not cruel to milk cows, as they will actually be in a lot of pain if the milk is not taken. However, some would say that it is cruel that we take the baby away from the cow, feed it synthetic formula, and steal the cow's milk for ourselves.

Milk is certainly healthy and a good source of many essential nutrients. However, cows certainly do not produce it for our use.

Cows produce milk so that they can be bred on farms as cattle and be milked every day. Think about it - how many wild cows do you see?

With milk as cow's main Gross Species Product they get to live forever in nice fenced off fields. Its an evolutionary thing people!

the same reason women produce milk its for feeding their young, the only reason why they can keep doning it is, we continue to take the milk from them, it stimulates the body telling it that there is still young that need food. If Women never stoped breast feeding their kids they would continue to produce milk. Have you ever heard of a mother still breast feeding her child all the way up until they were five? sick I know but it can happen. hope that clears it up for ya.

Cows lactate lots because they have been geneticly chosen to be rewarding and at the same time as cows aren't any further lactating they don't seem rewarding. For clarification, A newborn heifer calf received't supply milk for, an-universal, 2 years, which at the same time as they many times have their first calf. Then, a cow could have one calf each and every twelve months (many times) and could lactate for the 9 months after giving delivery and then be "dry" or "non-lactating" for both months previously having her next calf. Dry cows do not get a tremendous variety of interest, will contributes to the phantasm that cows ought to continually be lactating. interesting question!
