I've seen narratives written where each paragraph has an indention and I've seen them when they do not. I've also seen them vary......is there a rule or is it subjective to the writer. In other words is there a format that allows both?

Both are acceptable. It's called formatting style. Paragraphs delineated by a double-space and no indentation are called Block Style.Paragraphs.

Indented paragraphs are called Indented. It's all about style and format of the essay, letter, whatever.

The rule of thumb is basically not to mix the two styles. It looks unprofessional and makes the writer appear to not care about the details of form and formatting.

Also, there are paragraphs called 'hanging paragraphs'. They are usually direct quotes and both sides of the paragraph are indented. Therefore, it looks like they are 'hanging' from the paragraph above them.

If you notice, on this Yahoo! Answers site the paragraphs are in block style. Even if you indent, which I have, when your response is submitted the site formats it to its style requirements.

I hope this helps.

I'm pretty sure you need to indent them every time. I don't think I've heard otherwise, but as far as I know, it's mandatory to indent each and every single new paragraph, no matter what sort of manuscript.

yes you do have to indent unless you're skipping lines between each paragraph

Awww it rather is beautiful. the best factors of my existence meanwhile are extremely inconsequential. My father became a relentlessly self-recovering boulangerie proprietor from Belgium with low-grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mom became a fifteen-year-previous French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father might womanize; he might drink. He might make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. each each now and then, he might accuse chestnuts of being lazy : (
