the reason I'm asking is because my baby is 4 months and will not sleep on her back. If I put her on her back she wakes up and cries or just rolls over. I am concerned about her. Do you think it is safe?

The highest risk is 2-4 months. It drops further at 6 months, and the risk is gone at a year, by definition. SIDS is death from unknown reasons of a baby age under 1 year; an unexplained death at a later age isn't SIDS. If you didn't have that caveat, adults could die of SIDS, since there are cases where the cause of death can't be determined.

I agree with the woman who got her info from web md. My first son died of SIDS when he was 3 months 27 days. Some people tried to tell me all kinds of things that I did wrong, but the medical examiner that did the autopsy told me about SIDS and that there was nothing I could do. Some people confuse aspirating as SIDS but it is not he same. babies that sleep on their stomach and are not old enough to turn over can get choked or aspirate into their lungs if they throw up because they have no way of avoiding it, sometimes causing death. Babies that can turn over on their own are no longer considered at risk for choking or aspirating. SIDS is unpreventable no matter how your baby sleeps.

I was on webmd and read abou this yesterday. I sent page to Sister in law maybe this will help you.

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the death of a baby younger than 1 year old without a known cause. Typically, a parent or other caregiver puts the baby—who seems healthy—down to sleep and returns later to find the baby has died. No one is at fault when a baby dies of SIDS; it can be neither predicted nor completely prevented.

Although SIDS is rare, it is one of the most common causes of death in babies between 1 and 12 months of age. Most babies who die of SIDS are between the ages of 2 and 4 months.

SIDS normally does not happen to children age two and above, but if a child has had a SIDS episode, or has been diagnosed as one who may have SIDS, then three is the age. However, any child can die from anything at any time if things go wrong. Please always keep an eye on a child and pray for the best.

They are not really at risk any more once they can roll over. Also there is a 90% decrease in SIDS if your baby sleeps with a pacifier.

Try to get her used to sleeping on her back for now... Infants usually outgrow the risk of SIDS by the time they are 1. Until then, continue to put her to sleep on her back at night and during naps. By the time she is able to roll herself over from front to back (and vice versa) the risk is significantly reduced. Keep loose covers off of her and stuffed animals out of the bed until she is 1 also to help reduce your child's risk.

After 3 months the risks drop dramatically. If the baby rolls over by itself to sleep & can turn it's head to the side it will be okay.

A dear friend of mine lost his son at 2 1/2 to SIDS. I'm not sure how rare this is, but it did happen.
