The statue of Liberty is made of copper. The copper starts to corrode from weather, pollution, and just nature. The corrosion eventually turns green and is called a patina. This patina will also protect the copper from further corrosion.

It's copper. The copper turns to copper sulfide which is
then oxidized in air to copper sulfate, which appears green.
