Buy something that is cheap. If you like it, then later on, you can get a better quality instrument. Otherwise, you won't spend hundreds or thousands of dollars for nothing.

Depending on how old the person is, the instrument size would be different. Anyone around 10 should be playing a fullsize violin, normally. That's about the only "type" that you can choose.

For brands, a beginner should really not worry about that. Just get a cheap one that is any brand because it really won't matter right now. Later on, I would advise to go to your local violin shop and try out violins yourself. Each violin is unique and its brand does not justify the quality of it. If it sounds good and is easy to play, then by all means by it!--regardless of the brand. Besides, each violin is so different that violins within the same brand would be almost entirely different. So it really does not matter.

For a beginner, if you were looking for a really cheap instrument, I suggest eBay. You can get one less than $100. Or, if you are looking for a slightly better quality, go to sharmusic.com They sell violins for all types. Better yet, visit your local violin shop.

Remember, the first violin is never the best. You can always trade it in for a better one if you want, depending on whether you continue or not.

Hope this helped. Good luck!
