Legally, nobody is responsible for any of your Aunt's bills. Morally, the family usually pays them.

The deceased's estate is responsible for the damages. Because the deceased is unable to make the payments, the executor (a.k.a. personal representative) must pay the damages out of the estate. Although the executor is not personally liable for the damages, the apartment management may sue the estate and force the executor to answer.

I agree with Universal. Not to sound too macabre, but if you Aunt died in the apartment and the landlord only wants $200+ to replace the carpet, that sounds pretty cheap.

In Indiana, the phone company and any other credit would file a claim in the Estate action and the debts would be paid from Estate assets. If your Aunt didn't have much money, her Estate could be insolvent (too poor to pay) and your State will have a formula for paying her debts from the available monies.

If there are no assets in the estate, the creditors go unpaid. Medical creditors write off millions of dollars a year for this resaon.

This should be paid by her estate.
If there isn't a Executor and no money left, you should pay it, it isn't that much. But legally, you are not responsible.
