I also have a cat, I use 20 MuleTeam Borax laundry soap, put the dry soap in one of the cheap ketchup squirt bottles that you can buy at any dollar store, apply around baseboards, cabinets, vanities, under sinks around plumbing, anywhere you see signs of ants, also around the bottom of doors. Leave lay a few days until you no longer see any signs of the ants, they WILL carry it back to their nest and it WILL kill them.....when you no longer see any signs, vacuum up the excess laundry soap, and use the rest of the box to do laundry with....I have used this for years and my grandmother also used this.......ants have been bad this year and this is the first year I have had to do this twice, first time was early spring.

I had a very resistant colony living in my wall. After MUCH research and trying different brands of Ant Baits, vinegar, homemade Borax ect...I found the best way to kill them was the Terro liquid ant bait. I had seen this brand mentioned many times but because it was a bit more expensive I tried the cheaper stuff (Raid ect...) but I should have saved the time and trouble and went with Terro from the start. After 2 weeks on horrible infestation the entire colony was wiped out in 2 days.
PS...these things bite as bad as fire ants.

First of all keep doing what your doing. Take some Borox and place it along all your ledges and window sills. You must also attack the exterior with the ant granules that will kill them there too. If you have a crawlspace underneath your house, there is probably some existing wood and piles underneath, you must attack them as well. Use some rid-a-bug spray around the house spraying around the exterior and interior-
All windows, doors, openings, floor/wall junctures. If you want to get rid of them long, long term get your neighbors involved in attacting them in your lawn and theirs too. work together. It took me and five other houses two weeks to drive them off and they did reappear after a couple of years, but we pounced on them right away and they haven't been back for three now.

Mix some Boric Acid, sugar & water. The sugar attracts the ants then the Boric Acid kills them. If you mix it ~50/50 then you kill htat ant that takes the bate.
If you mix it w/ less Boric Acid, they take it home to feed Mama & the babies. The effect is cumulitive on Mama & the babies are more delecate, they die on the 1st feeding.
