I do not generalize about anyone--find 100 homeless people, and you'll find 100 different life stories...

My experience is the people who need the most help fall between the cracks and get no help. Many left homeless. Many alcoholics and druggies have a home. I think we should set up programs to decide if we can help them are they mentally stable what put them there...the system doesn't work for everybody.
Did you know if you didn't have an address that you cannot get food stamps? They say 3rd box under the bridge is undeliverable. Who would have thought. Some don't even have decent clothes to try for a job a McDonald's. I think we should take care of our own first and then the other countries, but just my opinion:-)

I think the homeless is a very sad situation becuase I believe the US has the resources to do something about it. I also believe there are homeless who do not want the help or are metally unable to receive help. I think the % that are alcoholics and drug addicts is very high. Probably 50% or higher.

Most cannot clean themselves and get a job. Like I mentioned above there are many that are mentally unable to do so. The others are so dependant on booze or drugs that they cannot help themselves. The problem is a serious Catch 22.

Most cities have homeless shelters that offer some support to help those who need it. There are some good success stories out there. There are also those who are so stubborn and feel they don't need the help. They would rather live on the street than to admit they need help or accept a legitimate offer. So many people are prideful. Pride is a serious problem and keeps many from getting out of the dumps.

Another problem on pride is this. A homeless person may be willing to clean up and try, but are they willing to work at McDonalds, or a gas station, or dig a ditch? Funny thing is, most want a nice job. Most, including those of us who have good jobs, are unwilling to perform these duties even for the benefit of our livelyhood or families.

I gotta quit here. This question leaves so much room for debate. The basic fact is, you can get off skid row, but do you want to. There are places to get help, but are you willing to drop your pride for a second to recieve it. The US and US cities have the resouces, but are they willing to solve the problem. Does it rank high enough on your slush funds to do something. Are you willing to help those who mentally cannot? or will we just let them die off like a common rat? It is a very sad situation.

I'd say that a good majority of homeless people are either alcoholics and/or drug addicts, however some others mentally unstable and should be institutionalized but are unfortunately left roaming the streets.

Yes, the ones who can should try to clean themselves up, but I also think that when you've reached the point where your problems and addictions have driven you to live on the streets and make just enough to get by, you as a person have reached a point where you hardly care anymore.

No , not all are alcoholics or druggies. Did you ever watch Jerry Springer's episodes on the mole people? The people who live underground in the abandoned subway stations?
A lot of them were just unfortunate and lost their jobs or whatever. They end up finding peculiar ways to make some money, but never strive enough to make more so they can move into a proper shelter.
One of the guys had been living as a "mole" for over ten years and was happy. Even under the filthy living conditions, he managed to have his bed, his stove , a place to brush his teeth once a week, and everything- just to get by.

They think what it is "good enough" is good for them.

A surprising number of homeless people are actually mentally ill. Many of them need to be in facilitites where they can be treated, but rarely do they want such treatments. Only some are actually alcoholics. Many of them are from the Vietnam era and since certain aspects of that war are being brought to the forefront by this war, we've learned a great deal about why they are homeless. Why the abandoned their homes and decided to live on the streets. There is a disorder one gets from being in a wartime situation called Post-Tramatic Stress Disorder that causes them to shun away from normal human contact and also gives rise to anger issues, among many other symptoms.

I think that probably most homeless people have had addictions which have largely contributed to their homelessness. But there are a small percentage of homeless people who have mental illness, which makes them unable to function in a normal family setting without medications. Often, the side effects from the medications are such that a person chooses not to take the meds, rendering them unable to fulfill obligations of a home life.
Try not to judge people who are homeless, as some have chosen that way of life, rather than being a burden on those who love them.

I think it is devided up into 3 groups.

#1...Drug addicts

#2...Alcoholics

#3...Suffer from mental disease...They are unemployable even if they don't do drugs or alcohol.

The groups in the first 2 catagories, COULD get help but they usually refuse it. Their habit is more important to them, than anything else.

SO....In a way, they TOO are probably suffering from some sort of mental condition.

I think the government should take a long hard and better look at this problem and figure out a way to treat these people, who are obviously not of sound mind.

I don't think MOST of them can help it, on their own. They need treatment.

Some homeless people are happy being homeless.

I think a good majority of the (75%) have some degree of mental impairment, but are drug abusers due to the homelessness and not the other way around.

As to cleaning them up and having them get a job, the impairment may be so severe that they lack the ability and desire to be steady and sober.

You can get fooled by what people can do, but it is so hard to tell.

I answered many questions but I never ever think about the points so I am not interested on your points but my simple answer is all these homeless people, drug abusers and alcoholics are the products of their society they were not born as a drug abuser, homeless and alcoholics. Only a social change will change their lives they need our help.
