As an inventor myself, it iis a good idea to make a prototype.
I have do this each time I concieve the product. Question? have you completed the nesessary research info?
1) to make sure the product is not out in public domain do a patent search online, just key in United States patent office.
2) if you have a good drawing of product or a architectual rendering of product drawing, it would be in your best interest to go to mall and ask permission to set up a little desk and perform a market study, most malls will allow this. have a questionair for people to fill out to have them give you feedback. people often give ideas to make product more appealling for public use as well.
3) however before doing this you will need to write patent office to have a patent pending status on your product. there is a small fee for that.
4) Do not go! for one of those invention R&D companies as these companies do play on the inventors excitement and other emotions to gain their acceptance with you. Please stay away from them.
I used one and have been regreting and still paying for it since$22000.00. also; as another kick in the A** one of the firms employees took liberty to take an additionional 10 k for their gambleing habits. Do not check with their local BBB, . FYI; because most BBB's most alway do not have any complaints against them, if they do they normally say that complaint has been resolved. It only serves as protection and a promo gimmic for companies to put on their Company infomation packet. They serve only to protect the firm. Do! contact the federal trade commission Dept as they get the real beef on these companies.
As your question reads you have already made contact with one... drop them do not sign contracts, as they will try to hold you to them. I do consulting on this subject see my profile page.

At the least email a certified letter with a copy of your invention. This serves as a record of when your idea was completed.

Yes. Other wise a business might think of the same idea, and you wont get a dime for it.

Yes, because if not someone could *suddenly* come up with something very similar, & you couldn't say anything! Get it goinng before you advertise it!
