In Houston, Tx, it is a city ordinance that any funeral procession have an escort. It is also a state law that all traffic yield to a funeral procession, but drivers do not always do that. The escort officers manage the traffic around the procession and at intersections to make sure the hearse and family of the deceased gets to the cemetery with as little interruption as possible.

Escorts
Because times have changed and people don't know or remember the old rules.
When you get buried is the last time you run red lights, and legally to boot.
It used to be that all cars in a funeral procession would have thier headlights on. That was how you were able to tell that the line of cars was following the hearse. Cars have changed, times have changed, and people are stupid.
Example: I got cut off during the procession for my son's funeral.
I believe the reason was simply not caring.
As he was a casualty of the Iraq War, his funeral was "advertised" for 3 days, including the parade past City Hall and the unusual closing of highway on-ramps.
Yes there was a Police escort, State PD and every town we passed through.

Why an escort? To tell people not to cut in the wrong line, something they should have learned in childhood.

Here's the truth of it all!

Funeral Procession do not have to stop for red lights and are exempt from the traffic laws and other vehicles are required to stop for the procession. The police escort is to insure the public's safety during this event.

So that they can drive ahead of the motorcade and stop traffic
so that all of the drivers can make it thru the lights so that they can all make it to the funeral at about the same time. It lets the general public know to behave in traffic and be respectful too.

Technically, they could't turn on their light fixtures and sirens till it is an emergency. So technically, they could't use light fixtures and sirens for a funeral. in spite of the undeniable fact that, police officials spoil that rule for all time, and there is truly no longer some thing you ought to do about it.

So the police can stop traffic at cross roads, at lights, etc. And to also keep the caravan of cars together so that they all arrive at the same time at the same place without any mishaps.

Because the caravan of cars has to stick together and they go slow so the police just keep them in order so other cars don't get between them.
