Call your former employer (or get someone else to do it if she would recognize your voice) and say that you are from so-and-so company, and wanted to ask some questions about yourself. If she is very snobby with her responses, you know what's going on. I recommend that if you think she's doing this, don't use her as a reference - by law (in Canada, anyway) prospective employers aren't allowed to contact former employers without your explicit consent.

By law in the United States no employer can do that. I would have someone call and say they are Joe Anyone from So and So Company. I would have them ask very specific questions that are not allowed to be answered like "Was she on time everyday?" or "What are her work habits?". By law in the United States they are only allowed to answer questions like "Is she rehire-able?", basically just verifying that you did work for that company. I have worked in the HR dept. way too long plus I had to know the rules before I started my business.

You violated the terms of your employment. Whatever the reason, this says something about your employability -- other employers know they will occasionally tick you off, and need to hire someone who won't walk off the job without notice. Next time, don't shoot yourself in the foot to spite an employer who couldn't care less about you.
