While that gadget does make sense for your application, it does require that you have a phone plugged into one of them. It then uses the wiring in your house to carry the signal - creating a bit of noise on the line.
I repeat: You need a phone for the gadget you mentioned to work.
However, you can get the internet without having a phone line - cable is one option, but you can get ADSL without a phone line. It's called dry loop / naked ADSL, and you'll probably pay a bit more a month, but that's ok.
Once you have a net connection look into VOIP. It's using the net connection to carry the signals of your phone conversation. This isn't a new idea in practice - the telcos have been doing the same for over a decade. But before, the modem part was in their offices / care. Most phone lines these days are digital anyways.
I know of places that have ADSL and VOIP for 40 bucks a month. Considering cable (here) is 55+ bucks... and ADSL is 35 bucks... that ain't bad!

Yeah, you can probably get them at Radio Shack or Best Buy.
You have to have a phone line somewhere, of course, and
there can be no power transformer between the line and the
computer and they can't be a huge distance away from each
other, but other than it should work.
It basically modules the signal over on top of the AC.

you must have either cable, a phone line, or dsl (another phone line) to get online. you can get online with satellite but its expensive.
if you do not have one of these, you can only get online if a close neighbor has it and is using wireless and has not secured his wireless router, AND you have a wireless nic in your laptop.

You need an external modem (hook up to your serial port) or internal modem. They don't cost that much. I say under $50 for 56k external.
That is only way.
