Y2K was how everyone referred to Year 2000, in 1999. Somewhere along the way, some computer nerd got the idea that computers were not set up to turn their clocks over from 99 to 00.. or something like that.
The great fear was that since almost everything in our modern lives is in some way run by a computer of some sort, then when the new millennium began, computers everywhere would crash, causing everything from hospitals to cash registers to crash.
It was going to be difficult to buy food, since everything would be catawonky.
On Dec. 31, 1999, folks were stocking up on bottled water just in case, and a few people even invested in food Hydra-something or other to freeze dry food for when the "big famine" hit.
Me? I was poor, so I was relying on my fat reserves to get me through. Ok, I confess, I bought and extra couple bottles of water.
Jan.1, 2000 came. There was no Y2K catastrophe and my wise fat reserves just translated into plain old fat. :-)
Here's the REAL reason why the Y2K disaster didn't come to pass:http://www.sock-monkey.com/y2k.html

There was a lot of concern, world-wide, that every computer in the world would no longer be able to run past the end of 1999, because of the way that their internal calendars had been designed to run.
Those fears never came to pass, but people were envisioning a worst-case scenario that included the very collapse of society--with jets falling out of the skies when their onboard computers crashed, etc.
You asked, "What is Y2K?" "Y" stands for "year," and "2K" stands for "2000." "Year 2000: The last year of civilization (if our worst fears come to pass!)."
