The instrument that you describe sounds like a Keytar. The technology has come on a bit since Herby Hancock's early stuff.
Take a look at the Guitarino which can play as a single instrument or a whole band.

In the 80/s there were these goofy keyboards that looked like guitars. They were just plain old keyboards in the shape of a guitar. I think people were trying to be cool and dance around on stage like a guitarist would.

It's called a Keytar, and it's possibly the epitome of 80's rock and roll.

Edgar Winter used to play this in the 70s. (Remember Frankenstein?) They're making a comeback?

It is a keytar, and here's one of the funniest things I've ever seen (and it just happens to include a keytar):

i recognize the cello and violins. i'm also somewhat keen on the harpsichord, notwithstanding no individual extremely seems to play it anymore - they take the straightforward way out and use a keyboard. :-( My demise Bride makes use of violin plenty of their song and that i happen to love them - one in all many doom metallic bands i love round bedtime. diverse ecu doom metallic bands and ecu black metallic bands will use classical instrumentation both of their intros or in the time of a few of their songs, extremely.
