I know someone who works for author house and there is NO WAY Jon would work for a dispreputable company. They are a self publisher, and the rates are pretty reasonable. I have heard a few people say that those kind of companies are no good, but the reasons they give just sound like sour grapes to me. Publish America may be on the rotten side, I don't know yet, but Author House is not.

I know AuthorHouse to be reputable. I know someone who has published their book through them, and I am considering it myself as well. They have a fair contract, and reasonable prices. They also pair you up with a publicist if you don't have one - something other self-publishing houses won't or can't do.
I have another friend who is publishing a book with iUniverse at this very moment, actually. There have been some disagreements about creative differences, and about syntax, but it's going well for her overall. She recommends it.

Any author worth their salt will not pay anyone to publish their book. Authorhouse is a self-publisher that preys on peoples' wishes to be published, and usually leaves them with cases full of books and nowhere to sell them.
If your book is worth publishing, you should seek an agent and seek reputable publishers.
If you just want copies of your book in your hand and have money to burn, then more power to you. Most bookstores won't even consider carrying self-published books.
Here's a resource for writers to check out publishers they know nothing about.
http://www.anotherealm.com/prededitors/
It's called Preditors and Editors and should have info on anyone you hear about.

Authorhouse, iUniverse, and PublishAmerica are not good places to go.
