My five year old enjoys playing a game called "NO STRESS CHESS." Basically, it's a card game that is played over a chess board. The cards make it easy and fun for the kids and they can actually beat their old man.

Candyland and all the other games mentioned here are decent standards but teaching a kid at 5 how to play chess provides them with knowledge that they may be able to use anywhere in the world, whether they speak the language or not. Chess is played all over the globe. This is a gift a 5 year old will thank you for years from now, long after the Chute's and Ladders has gone in the closet.

A deck of cards can give you a wide variety of games: Crazy Eights (which plays just like Uno except the 8's are wild)

For board games, Candy Land, Chutes & Ladders, Trouble, Hangman,

And yes, you can try chess at that age.

I remember when I was a kid, Burger King was giving away chess sets (OK, it was a sheet of cardbard with cutout pieces).
My sister and I (kindergarten and 2nd grade) picked up one of these after dinner, read the rules, and started playing.
My folks walked in because we were 'too' quiet, you know the 'quiet' that usually means someone's trying to flush a frog down the toilet.
Imagine their surprise.

Sorry, Candy Land. I'm sure there are more, go to the Toy Store and look at the age appropriate listings. Good for you for playing games with your daughter. It is a good way to spend some quality time.

The previous two that have been mentioned are great also look for some type of memory game. Sometimes they have them with favorite cartoon characters like Mikey Mouse, Strawberry Shortcake or Winnie the Pooh.

Definetly Pretty Pretty Princess. Always a classic, and if she's a girly girl she is guaranteed to love it. There is also a more active game called Elefun. I bought that for my 4 year old neice and she liked it a lot.
